I knit my very first stitch while on vacation with my sister.
At what point did you really start feeling like a knitting designer?
I think once I started paying a technical editor to review my files I started to feel like my designing had gotten bigger than the hobby it started out as.
There are so many different things that inspire me. Sometimes it's a movie I've watched, a memory I've had, or the yarn itself that I find inspiring. Sometimes, it's the outfit that I envision the design being styled with. 99% of the time, I see the photo I want to have and the mood I want it to create in my head, before I even pick up the needles.
Do you have a favorite type of item to design?
I love designing clothing for my kids and at the moment, I'm really enjoying working on shawls.
What is a technique you particularly like to use in your patterns?
Almost all of my patterns include m1 increases. I love using that type of increase to shape.
Simplistic with just enough detail to keep it interesting. I design things that I like to knit. I have 2 small children and not a lot of time, so things that take too much concentration end up being frustrating for me.
Which of your designs is your favorite? (if you had to choose...)
I really can't choose. All of my designs are special to me because while some are less advanced than others, each one shows where I was at that particular point in time, both in knitting skill, pattern writing ability and in life in general.
Well it's no secret that I like my design partner Alicia Plummer's work. She's always right on trend and has a knack for making garments that flatter everyone!
Any upcoming projects you can give us a hint about?
I'm currently knee deep in Fall design work. I have both garments and accessories on the needles. I hope to get some of these new knits photographed and in testing by August! Wish me luck! lol
Thank you so much, Melissa!
